In many interviews the subject is asked for a factoid or something unique about him- or herself. Stacey Naito's factoid is right there attached to her name—she's a doctor.
Dr. Stacey Naito is a physician and published medical researcher. She's board-certified in family medicine, but she admits that her biggest passion is fitness. It's the reason she
attained a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Occidental College in Los Angeles before pursuing medicine.
Aside from her practice in Southern California, she's been competing in NPC bikini events for the past five years, and not long ago, on her 14th try, she attained her IFBB pro card. Now, that's persistence!
Let's find out a bit more about this driven woman—the doctor is in.
Q: How did you get started in health and fitness?
A: I can honestly say that weight training saved my life and kept me on track for optimal health. When I was 19, I became anorexic, dropping to 85 pounds on a 5'5" frame. When I reached my 20th birthday, one of my friends remarked that I had the body of a
40-year-old. Once I realized what I was doing to myself, I resolved to become a banner for health and fitness. I began weightlifting, obtained a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Occidental College, and began working as a trainer.
Even when I endured the rigors of medical school and residency, I was consistent about clean eating and training. Now, at the age of 47, I could rival 20-somethings with my physique, and I'm extremely proud of that!
Q: What's your best accomplishment to date and your proudest moment?
A: The day that I attained IFBB professional status was one of the best days of my
life! I had worked so hard to reach that level, coming very close four times but just missing the mark each time. I traveled to Teaneck, New Jersey, this past July for my
14th pro-qualifying event and came home with two national first-place finishes, an overall title and that coveted pro card.
